Whatever Happened to Student Activists?
I thought I’d share something from my Journalism class the other day.
One of the other returning students and I kept making suggestions about topics for the next issue of the newspaper. Invariably all we got were blank looks from the others. Some examples:
What’s happening in Iraq and Iran? blank stares
What significance does the area we live in have to Hawaiian history/legend? blank stares
Are gas prices really being controlled by the Government… or do we just get lip-service? blank stares
I’m taking Journalism because I needed another writing intensive class for my degree and was "invited" to take the class. (someone actually thought I could write, lol ) Some of the other students are actually taking the class because they want to be journalists. I guess they want to write about something other than current events, history, or politics.
Am I just getting that old, or does it seem that students (people) today just don’t really give a damn about what’s happening in the world now? I remember student protests all over the news back in the day… did America just decide to hide her face in the sand after that?
