    It Ain’t Rocket Science

Filed under: Humor, Dubious Wisdom — DB @ 1:15 pm

Once in a while you just have to laugh.  While wandering through the newspapers this morning the humor that always seems inherent in human beings lack of consciousness relieved my temporary boredom for a few moments.

As everyone knows by now, it’s been raining almost constantly in Hawai`i for over a month now.  Like for over 40 days and nights Mother Nature has been dumping buckets on us.  The first couple of weeks it was just the normal "winter in Paradise" stuff.  Winter and/or Spring in Hawai`i means it rains instead of snows, a lot.  It’s hard to make snow when it’s over 70 degrees, so nature settles for torrential rain for a couple of months instead.  No big surprises here, right?

What really cracks me up is the comments people make about the weather and conditions.  It starts me wondering once again if maybe we had the right idea back in the sixties.  Free Love and drugs applenty kept pretty much everyone occupied so we didn’t have to question the relative reasoning power of our neighbors; or maybe that’s why there just doesn’t seem to be much reasoning power left, who knows.

"We’re learning a lot about the weather and its affect on our land".  Huh?  This is Hawai`i folks.  It rains in Hawai`i every year.  Every year tons of crap (literally) and mud wash into the ocean because it doesn’t have anywhere else to go. It has been doing this for millions of years and will probably keep doing it for millions of years to come.  Ancient farmers learned to terrace their land so less of it washed away every year, but modern man in his wisdom decided that building houses on the side of a mountain was very cool.  Um, guess what?  When you build a house on the side of a mountain, and it rains enough, you’ll probably get mud in your living room.  It must be that people think the dirt is different here in Hawai`i than it is in California where mud slides are so common.  Maybe it’s just me.

    Here’s another brilliant one:
"Hawaii has now endured 40 days and 40 nights of rain and catastrophic flooding. Thunder crashes about me as I write. No one here has built an ark, but scientists say that like the Great Flood of the Bible, mankind has brought this on itself." (Letter)

Not that man hasn’t made some pretty stupid misstakes, but Dude, the only thing this tells me about God is that he/she has a sense of humor.  God probably reads the newspapers too.

Not to pick on Hawai`i, I also remember all the wonderful comments about the weather in Colorado too.  Every year in Colorado there is a blizzard somewhere.  Every year in Colorado there is a huge increase in the number of accidents the first few days of snow.  You know, because they forgot that it snows in Colorado in the winter time and can’t remember how to drive in the stuff.  Then, of course, you always have those inevitable comments in the newspaper and on TV by government officials who say things like,"this is the worst I’ve ever seen it here!"  Did you just move here (Colorado) from Florida yesterday, or were you lighting your bong too often back in the sixties and lost those brain cells?  It snows in Colorado folks, it has for millions of years, and I imagine the cave men couldn’t drive in it either.  Then of course they always go on to say,"Our city Council has addressed these issues recently, however additional funding for keeping our streets safe will not be voted on until next year."  You were where again last year when the same thing happened for the umpteenth year in a row?

Excuse me, I need to get ready to fly to Kauai to practice my rocket science.
