    Non-Profit Abuse?

Filed under: Crappola, Corporate — DB @ 1:04 pm

As much as I hate to draw you away from my previous attempt at humor, there is an interesting story in todays Honolulu newspaper that points out some of the issues I’ve tried to address before.

    State checks 200 nonprofits

"The state attorney general is looking into potential abuses at more than 200 nonprofit organizations, with allegations ranging from paying executives excessively high salaries to spending nearly all the money collected on fund-raising costs." (Honolulu Advertiser)

It’s not that I actually expect the state to take any real action, but at least somebody has finally thrown a flag on the play and brought some attention.  After all, there are over 5,000 charities and they are only targeting 200… about 4% of them.  It would certainly do my heart(?) some good to see some of these abusers get spank.gif ’d.

    10. DB,

Thanks for giving me an update on your site. Looks nice. Is this a paid hosting service you’re using or not? Just curious.

      Thanks,

    12. Couldn’t find any cornholing smilies, DB? I agree with you. There are some very snakey NFP’s out there.

    14. B’tude, you gotta be careful who you tell to spank you. Some of us just might do it! Heh. Oh yeah, and I bite too! :P

    15. It’s really sad to me when things like this happen. It’s hard enough to know who’s legit and who’s not when trying to help out. Things like this deter good people from donating to good NFP’s.

      P.s.
      I love the “spankin’” lmao

       Comment by Jade — Monday - May 2, 2005 @ 9:46 am
    16. It is sad Jade, but that’s why we need to be very careful about to whom we give our money. The vast majority of NFP’s are hard working and legit, unfortunately wherever there is money there are also chances for greed and abuse.

    18. Great idea Kim!

Maybe we should all start our own NFP’s…
Hmmmm… “HI, I’m DB… I Blog For cash. All donations will go directly to the Support DB Foundation. P.S. We will also accept donations in the form of articles, chickens, pigs, and trade for services. All donators will receive an 8X10 glossy suitable for hanging in your garage and/or cellar.”

    19. Your post basically reiterates why I tend to not trust nonprofits. It seems that SOMEBODY usually profits, although not necessarily the actual cause behind the “nonprofit” company.

       Comment by Jim — Monday - May 2, 2005 @ 1:04 pm
    20. You’re right Jim, it is hard to know who to trust.

Please see my previous article about non-profits:

    21. All spanking aside (gee, Priss!)–most people consider the term “non-profit” to mean exactly that. This is simply not the case. They are corporate entities, and while they are subject to the same perks and regulations of any other corporate entity, they do assume an attitude of being “untouchable” by such regulations.

Both the government (state and federal) are hesitant in taking action against them because of the services they provide, and they are essentially bringing the hammer down on their own contractors/subcontractors. i.e.: shooting themselves in the foot.

Wrong is wrong, any way you look at it.

       Comment by Bitchitude a.k.a. GlassHoppah — Monday - May 2, 2005 @ 1:20 pm
    22. Speaking of non-profits, Look at some of these so called new Churches popping up all over the place. They use the church to get money from different organizations, and regular hard working people, and they’re tax exempt because they are considered non-profit. There’s a few of them right here in Waianae. And you see these folks with 3 brand new cars, buying properties with 3 or 4 houses on them. Where is the money coming from?

       Comment by Tutu — Monday - May 2, 2005 @ 2:50 pm
    23. I understand that people need to get paid for their work Tutu… but driving around in BMW’s and living in multi-million dollar houses while their organization’s mission suffers doesn’t seem right to me.

Much of the money, by the way, comes from state funding, grants, paid for state services, and other state and federal support. Our taxes, in other words… spent on funding non-profits… double dipping.

       Comment by DB — Monday - May 2, 2005 @ 3:21 pm
    24. How do I become non-profit? I need a new car.

      And a house.

      And groupies.

    26. Well Kaos… B’Tude wrote an article on it, but we’ll have to get her input because I con’t remember where she put it, lol

Tell ya what… we’ll start our own. How about the “Society Under Corruption, Knowledge, and Yuppies?” or “Foundation of Useless Crapolla Knowledge, Unincorporated?” (I like the acronym for the second one the best), lol

Becky - Since there’s only going to be 200 of them investigated out of 5,000(a mere token attempt) they’ll probably slide by, but one can always hope :)

I’ve a better idea! Let’s post a “support me” link and have all the money go to The Society for the Preservation of the Shumaker Family! ;-) It can be a NFP!

WTF, we have plenty of people for the Bored of Directors here! We even have an attorney, Carl! (BTW… I did do a search…now THAT’s abuse… hope they nail the suckers)

Hey I get to be CFO damnit, it was my idea!

Seriously, if anyone has any information on Corporate scams, non-profit or otherwise, send it to me and I’ll be happy to post it.

Geeezh… If I’d know all I had to do was mention spanking to get you all fired up I’d have done it months ago, rofl

    36. Hi M&M :)
I think for the most part people are pretty trusting… when that trust is abused it’s about re-evaluating who we trust from now on… and maybe about who we elect to protect our interests.
